Two Planctus
(poems of mourning) survive, one for William Longsword and one for William the
Conqueror. The Longsword planctus has
been printed several times; none of these is considered definitive (it exists
in very different manuscripts). "Complainte
sur la mort de Guillaume Longue-épée." In Le règne
de Louis IV, edited by Philippe Lauer, 319-23. Bibliothèque de l'École
des hautes études 127. Paris: Émile Bouillon, 1900. Also
printed as "Complainte sur l'assassinat de Guillaume Longue-épée,
duc de Normandie." Edited by Jules Lair. Bibliothèque de l'École
des chartes 31 (1870): 389-406. The same
author published transcriptions of two manuscripts, along with excellent facsimiles,
and a reconsituted edition, in Lair, Jules. Étude sur la
vie et la mort de Guillaume Longue-épée, duc de Normandie. Paris:
Picard, 1893. Finally, it was printed as
"Der planctus auf den Normannenherzog Wilhelm Langschwert (942)." Edited
by Phillipp August Becker. Zeitschrift für französische Sprache und
Literatur 63 (1939): 190-97. For facsimiles
of the manuscripts, transcriptions, and the text of the editions, see Planctus
for William Longsword.
And for William the Conqueror,
Dosdat, Monique. "Le deuil du roi Guillaume: Étude critique et étude
