    • The Planctus for William Longsword.. The author, Rob Helmerichs, calls this site "a laboratory in medieval philology," and indeed it offers a wealth of material for anyone interested in the transmission and interpretation of medieval texts. The Planctus is a vexing text and therefore particularly suited for such scrutiny. A mourning poem written soon after the assassination of William Longsword in 942, it idealizes this son of the viking Rollo, who had ravaged France until its king granted him the territory around Rouen, seed of the future duchy of Normandy.
